MP Tony Vaughan joins Mundella Primary School breakfast club

Pupils arriving at Mundella Primary School at 8am for breakfast club, were joined by a special guest this Friday (2nd May), MP for Folkestone and Hythe, Tony Vaughan.

At the start of the new term, pupils across 750 schools in the UK joined the Government’s new breakfast club scheme. Mundella in Folkestone was one of them, however, Mundella has actually been running its hugely successful and well-attended breakfast club for many years!

For more than half of all pupils in the school, 8am is the start of the school day, a chance to connect with other pupils, staff and start their learning. Mundella has seen huge success, not only in improvement of transition and welfare, but also supports improving attendance and readiness to learn. Mundella is proud of their breakfast club, which has been free for all pupils since 2021.

Breakfast club is a calm environment, setting pupils up for their day of learning, whilst enjoying a healthy breakfast to start their day.

Unlike many school breakfast clubs which take place in the school hall, breakfast club takes place across the school year groups. Each classroom has its own breakfast club activity box, full of resources specific to the year groups, as well as each room having its own dedicated breakfast box with cereals and fruit, and a breakfast bagel trolley which makes its way through the school each morning too! This year it has been enhanced with training in age-appropriate board games with the support from Flourished Education, to support the development of social skills.

On Wednesday, pupils are also treated to tennis lessons, a favourite with pupils when asked what the best thing about breakfast club is!

During Ofsted’s visit to Mundella in May 2024, they observed how Mundella’s ‘breakfast club and a wide range of after school clubs are provided to widen pupils’ interests and develop their skills’. It’s not only about supporting our pupils, but also ensuring all pupils and families are supported in the cost of living crisis, regardless of need.

Since joining the Government’s new scheme, Mundella aims to use any additional funding to support breakfast club resources, to further enhance their fantastic offering for their pupils. Mundella and Veritas MAT were delighted to welcome MP Tony Vaughan to see first-hand, the impact the breakfast club is having to pupils and the local community.
